Jozani forest sanctuary is one of the last remaining sanctuaries of the red colobus Monkey. This species is endemic to Zanzibar.

The red colobus offer wonderful photo opportunities. the sighting of this creatures is phenomenal. The red colobus live in the forest reserves. You can also encounter them on the pathways. Engage with this friendly creatures, shake a hand if possible.
The Monkeys were once an endangered species. Their numbers have increased in recent years thanks to conservation work. This nature reserve working closely with the local people. This has created awareness on importance of this wildlife species.Educating the community has played a major role in conservation. It is estimated that there are now between 2,000-2,500 monkeys. The monkeys are wild, but it is possible to get close to them. They carry on their normal activities as though human visitors do not exist.
Jozani Forest Sanctuary has an excellent nature trail. A walk through this impressive flora and fauna is one of the highlights Zanzibar has to offer. Walk through the Mangrove swamps and forest to complete the circuit. The guides have excellent knowledge. They will engage you as you enjoy the beauty of nature. The excursion can be a half or full day trip depending on your time.
